It’s surprising what people are capable of surviving. This little article is dedicated to three people who survived some truly amazing circumstances, from jumping out of a five story window (Twice), to being shot in the head with a particle accelerator beam, and more importantly- how they survived.

They say that lightning never strikes the same place twice. Tell that to Roy Sullivan, who was struck a total of Seven Times In his life.

He was struck in 1942, 1969, 1970, 1972, 1973, 1976 and 1977. Supposedly, he developed a case of paranoia after the third time and became convinced a higher power was out to get him. Mind you, considering the odds of being struck by lightning ONCE in 80 years are 576,000 to one, and the odds of being struck by lightning seven times are 10^25 to one, can you blame him?

Strangely it was not the lightning that killed him. He killed himself over unrequited love.
The Facts

I’m afraid I’ve mislead you somewhat here, as the odds of surviving a lightning strike are actually not all that bad. A bolt of lightning is a truly phenomenal piece of nature, a bolt lasts only a split second, but is hotter than the surface of the sun. Individual bolts are also not that large, in effect being struck by lightning is in many respects like being shot- with the added bonus that the wound is instantly cauterized.

Reports of people surviving lightning strikes abound, the most common injury is usually a burn, which while very painful and debilitating, is not usually fatal. Those who have had a direct strike land on their bodies often have holes or other full blown wounds to show for it, and if the strike passes through a vital organ, it will of course destroy it. The point is that being struck by lightening is not like being electrocuted per se (Although I wouldn’t handle electronics without a wriest strap immediately after a strike), it’s more like being shot with a high energy beam that burns through your body rather than relying on the kinetic energy of a bullet. Speaking of which…

A moment of introspection.

I think that I managed to break out of my low ebb over the past couple of days. It’s strange the way my psyche tends to work, many of my friends have expressed concern that I may be a manic depressive, and sometime I find myself wondering if they’re right.

I tend to go through phases of general happiness and contentedness, and then through periods of total moroseness and lethargy. This is of course a common element of the human condition. However, I have never been able to quantify the reasons behind these swings. Those who go through periods of joy and sadness can usually link specific events to the start or end of a period of a set disposition. For example, a promotion leading to a period of happiness and general wellbeing, or the death of a loved one leading to a period of angst and sadness.

Of course, I have my outlook set by external events within the process of my life, I laugh when entertained, and am angered when mistreated, so naturally if events over which I have no control conspire against me and my wishes, I have a tendency towards frustration. Likewise, when things are going my way, happiness abounds.

The problem I have is that often times I can observe upon my outlook, an effect without a cause. Why, when nothing in particular has happened of late to cause me concern, do I find myself anxious and fretting? Or when nothing has happened to cause it, do I find myself lethargic, apathetic and depressive? One could say that without proper stimulation, the human mind’s tendency is to move towards a discontented state. In short, without anything new, or interesting in our lives, even negative events, we naturally drift towards the dark end of the mental spectrum.

This effect is often seen in many higher animals, we are frequently told how dogs must be kept amused and busy, and a bored parrot is a recipe for a ruined home. Why then is it, that if these fallow periods continue I can find myself drifting beyond the bounds of my dark introspection, and into the light of happiness and all other things Walt Disney? Again, without any cause, the event transpires anyway. I eventually rise from dark ashes and walk again amongst the sunlight, my disposition much improved, my life more full, and my day more active.

I have pondered this problem considerably, especially today as I seem to have once again come out of the low ebb of the cycle, despite continuing tensions at work and a precarious financial situation. Based upon all available evidence available to me at this time, I can come up with only one conclusion as to why my cyclic moods continue to rule my life, despite my best efforts.

I need to get laid. Badly.

Google Maps Sparks Japanese Race Row.

Back in the feudal days, Japan was divided by caste. The lowest of these castes where the Burakumin, those whose jobs involved death. They where butchers, tanners and grave diggers, and in the highly ordered society of Japan with it's own unique cultures and laws, those who worked these jobs where considered tainted.

Even today, the descendants of these people, or those who live on the sites of old Burakumin villages face prejudice. Some companies refuse to hire the Burakumin, and the sites of the old villages are often targeted by graffiti and hate crimes.

Now, using old Japanese maps, google has added a new layer to its records of the region to show how Japan has changed throughout history. These maps also include details of the sites of old Burakumin villages, so now these places can be identified far more easily, and the Japanese government is concerned about the potential backlash against these communities.

A serious announcment regarding ID cards.

Here at the blog of many things, we like a good laugh. But sometimes things need to get serious. This is one of those situations.

Despite continued opposition, labour has decided to go ahead with it's controversial idea to launch ID cards. The scheme begins today in the city of Manchester. at first the ID cards are going to be voluntary, but soon they will be compulsory for airport staff. The government aims to have everyone with an ID card by 2017.

I am begging the people of Manchester not to join this scheme. These ID cards are totally unnecessary, and are just another way for the government to keep tabs on the populace and invade out privacy.

Allow me to spell this out for everyone: WE ARE BECOMMING NAZI GERMANY.

Your grandparents and your parents fought and died for NOTHING. Fascism is coming, but the administration is playing the long game. People are being barred from entering Britain just for their political views. Many of these people are pricks, but it's their right to be a prick if they want.

The government continues to tighten its grip on telecommunications, logging all your contacts and accessing personal information on social networking sites. How long before they not only monitor who you are contacting via e-mail, but also what you are saying? How long before they listen to phone calls rather than just checking the log?

September 11th was a tragedy. July 7th was too, but for the love of the land people, we are not under threat. Terrorism is no bigger threat now than it was before.

Our government are the biggest terrorists, using fear to control the masses, and take away all the rights and liberties they claim to be protecting.

Sod it, the only people who ever take notice of these things are conspiracy nuts and acne ridden teenagers.

I'll just end by saying please, please say no to the ID card scheme. At the very least, it will save you some money. And it might save much more.

This article is not meant to generate large amounts of views, it is just about a personally uplifting moment which I had. The story starts when my summer job ended and I decided to be a waiter etc. Yesterday as I was waiting on people in my small hometown, one man and his wife come in. I greet them and he asks me, Son, I have a question for you. What is the lightest thing you can carry and costs the most? Well I was perplexed by this and was trying to decide wether he meant the most expensive yet light meal, or if he was truely joking and meant something like a peanut butter packet for 25cents (being the lightest thing we sold it would be the most expensive thing that is the lightest.) So I wonderd about this and didn't return to his table until I was sure I had a suitable answer. I discussed it with my fellow employees and we came to a conclusion, he was NUTS!

5 Myths and half truths about computers and the internet

When you install something to your hard drive it’s there permanently. –PARTIALLY TRUE.

The Myth:
We’ve all heard the horror story. You’re mate’s dad’s nephew threw away his old computer, and three days later his credit card information had been stolen! There was this company right, and they threw away old PC’s and hackers nicked the computers and got loads of personal information they sold to spammers!

Cases like this DO happen, but this doesn’t mean they’re common. With a little effort, you can ensure no data at all survives on your old hard drive. In order to understand this half truth, and how you can make sure this doesn’t happen to you, we need to look at how a hard drive works.
The Facts:

Imagine your hard drive is a giant library. Every library has a reception desk, in the case of the hard drive, we call this the index file. Now when you run a program, your computer needs to get the program from your hard drive. So it goes to the index file and asks where all the information on the hard drive is.

Just like when you go to the library and ask where a book is.

When you delete something from your hard drive, it isn’t actually removing the data, it’s only removing it’s entry from the index file. So as far as your computer is concerned, that data no longer exists, even though it is physically still there. That’s where the myth comes from!

But, when you put information on your hard drive (Say installing a new game), the index file looks for gaps in the bookshelf to put the new program. Remember, as far as the computer is concerned, a file that isn’t listed in the index does not exist, so if it finds that the spot on the hard drive previously occupied by the removed file is big enough for the new program, it will write over the old file with the new one.

Hard drives store data using magnetism, so the new magnetic pattern destroys the old one. Without getting too technical, bits of the old program may survive, and can be rebuilt by specialist programs.
Safeguards:

There are many programs that will fill up your hard drive with ‘junk data’ overriding everything on the drive, then they’ll do it again and again and again until all that’s present on the drive is a junk string of 0’s and 1’s. Many of these are available free online.

There’s also a low tech solution too. It’s called a hammer.

Do you like writing? Do you want to make a little extra money on the side? The following websites are ones that I have successfully used to make money online. None are get rich quick schemes, but all of them require some effort to make money.

Triond- Writing online articles. They take exclusive rights to your work, but offer consistent payments though.

Xomba- You can write almost anything, but money is made by advert clicks on your articles. Therefore no clicks, no money. But saying that you can make a lot of money if people do click your articles. It also offers cash prize competitions, which I have won twice! These have been temporarily put on hold, but will be relaunched when the website is updated in the comming few weeks.

Bukisa- Similar to Triond, but you keep rights to your work. Also, you need to do how to or informative articles.

Blogspot. Put some adverts on your blog, and gain money when people click!

Zlio- This is an intersting idea. You set up an online shop, and then resell items on behalf of another merchant. You never have to handle goods yourself. If you write reviews, then linking to a product in your shop could result in a nice kickback...

Some of these offer referral schemes. I’ve included my referral within the link, so if you do join, please join using those links. You will not suffer any loss of earnings, the websites just pay me a little, and if you do decide to join then get in touch and I will help you out any way I can. They are NOT just pyramid schemes!

Out of all of these the one I've had the most success with is Triond. However, I spend 90% of my time making money online using triond. I have however just started using Bukisa, and so far I have to say that it looks even more promising than triond.

Whichever of these you choose, it will NOT be easy or quick to make money from these sites. However they are not scams. If you love what you do though, You'll find them very rewarding.

Awesome Anti Matter!

Anti matter is one of the most fascinating substances in physics. More reactive than even the most violent of Alkali metals, and releasing more energy per KG than even the most devastating nuclear weapons. Anti matter is pretty impressive stuff.

Anti matter was predicted to exist by the brilliant British Mathematician Paul Dirac in 1928, and the simplest form of anti matter (Positrons- positively charged electrons), where detected a few years later in cosmic rays. Since then, anti matter has inspired science fiction writers and theorists alike with many wild ideas. CERN, famous as being the home of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) also contains facilities for experimenting with anti matter.

In this short series of articles, I will be looking at anti matter and illustrating just how powerful it is. Those of you who don’t have any background in physics need not worry, I’ll explain everything step by step (though a little knowledge of maths will help)!

You think not showering because it is Saturday is proper? You think because you forgot to brush your teeth a Tic-Tac will be enough? I think not.

You think it is fine since it is a day off you don't need to shower, well your gross! You argue "Well I am not going to see anyone today why bother"! Personally I keep clean for my own good not yours, I don't mean to be rude or offensive, (OK maybe a little!) but I don't care what you think I enjoy being clean! So the girl/guy thinks it is OK too! Well then go to have a nice relaxing sit down on the couch watching reruns and sitting in your own B.O. i don't find that overly attractive!

Your teeth have something called an enamel, some people brush obsessive compulsively, good job. however others only brush when they have a hot date, which to me is ironic because what do you do when your married? Better yet, what do you do when your teeth are disgusting and no one can listen to you without a gas mask?! Yes, you need to consider these things before you are overly lazy with yourself!

This little project of mine seems to be doing alright! the number of visitors each day has gone up, and the interest seems to be there. Now, I'd like to get this blog updated at least daily, but alas, I am only one man.

Here's where you, yes YOU come in! I need someone to help me fill up this blog and keep it ticking over. And I think you've got the right stuff. You can post anything provided it's not overly adult. You can post opinions, links to blogs, promote your own work, promote other peoples, or just share cool stuff you've found with the rest of the world!

After the Sweedish court's rulling against the pirate bay, I think we actually have the power and the precident to sue google. Anyone want to try?

Evis Reviews Resident Evil 5

I began playing resident evil five on Saturday the 11th of April 2009, and finished it nine and a half hours later. I’ve not played a game through from start to finish in one sitting since metal gear solid 3: Snake eater.

In my review of the last remnant, I began by saying that the game wasn’t all that good. Then I sang it’s praises for three pages. Here, I will be doing the opposite.Resident Evil five is a pretty fun game, but the frustrations are many, and some of them made me want to throttle small children. So here we go, Resident evil.... FIVE!

Some personal views here. Basically, I support nuclear weapons. I think they've saved a lot of lives and create a more stable political world. I'm aware that many oppose my view, so for those people I have written out this little article.

The Haldane principle- an excuse for scientists to do whatever they want.

The Haldane principle is an admirable thing, and it ensures that the academia of science is not tainted by outside influences. However at this current moment in time perhaps this is what is needed. An example would be the LHC, a fantastic piece of kit for certain, and probing the very fundamentals of physics, hopefully to answer questions about how the universe works on a level more fundamental than we yet understand. But I personally feel this is noting more than knowledge for knowledge's sake. Science has improved the lives of people for generations with inventions and concepts such as computers, vaccination, ecology and fundamental scientific method. But what does the LHC, the higgs boson and M-theory all give to the masses? Will it improve their quality of life? Will it cure their illnesses?

Like the moon landings 40 years ago, the LHC is a great accomplishment of science, but is ultimately nothing more than a white elephant. It does nothing to actually improve ourselves as a society, with the possible exception of smiling and feeling smug that we can do it.

We should emphasise spending in areas that will tackle our immediate problems- Climate change, AIDS, Cancer, The energy crisis and so forth. Spending should still be given to purely academic pursuits, but not so much as is given to research into areas that will ultimately provide solutions to problems.

Beer is an excellent source of B vitamins (except for B12).

There are eight B vitamins

in total, and each of them has an important role to play in the human body. Lack of bee… uh I mean B vitamins can cause insomnia, dementia, sensitivity to sunlight, depression and an irregular heart beat. Conversly enough, excessive drinking can frequently cause insomnia, dementia, sensitivity to sunlight, depression and an irregular heart beat. You know what I mean. I've seen the pictures on the internet…

Either way, beer is a fantastic source of all but one of these vitamins- B12. B1 and B2 are also lacking, but are present. Two of these wonderful little vitamins are B-6 and B-3- Niacin and Pyridoxine to their friends. They are very helpful when trying to gain a good nights rest. The fact that in beer, you also get a nice hit of alcohol as well means that a pint before bed can help you sleep, and I can personally vouch for the truth in this.

What is the blog of many things? Well, the answer to that is simple. I couldn't decide what to make a blog about, so I decided to do it for everything! Every three days I'm going to put together a list of websites, blogs, articles and videos pertaining to a topic of my choice (Or your choice if you e-mail me suggestions). It's sort of like research and share.

Through this I hope to improve my own knowledge base and also create an interesting read for other people. So, here we go then. The blog of many things starts now, my first topic shall be....
